Artist
Hunter Cahill
Hunter Cahill writes about faith, drinking and the people we love. The Austin songwriter’s music is spare and intimate, built around piano, guitar and a voice that makes a private admission feel like a conversation.
Cahill spent years on the road before releasing his own songs, starting at sixteen with the Echoing Green. He later toured the Southwest with Albuquerque’s Oh, Ranger!, a familiar name in the region’s early-2000s indie rock scene. While living in Seattle, he joined Say Hi for shorter runs and two national tours.
His debut collection, Some Things You Don’t Know About Me, arrived as six self-recorded singles in 2021 and 2022. The songs were frank about loneliness, dependence and the fear of passing hurt on to someone else. In the photographs that accompanied them, he wore a wolf mask.
His 2024 single “Old Love” turns toward the comfort of a lasting relationship. It is a tender song about knowing another person’s habits and choosing, again, to stay.
For the Estuary Sessions, Cahill worked with engineer Matt Gerhard over two days at Estuary Recording in Austin. Piano, acoustic guitar and ukulele accompany songs that reach back to a religious upbringing and follow its echoes into adult life. In June 2026, he shared an unmasked portrait with the caption “No more mask.”
The first singles, “Getting By” and “Don’t Take Your Light,” take on drinking and grief through the small routines of daily life. “When I Fell Asleep” reaches further back. With piano and Sadie Wolfe’s cello, Cahill revisits the childhood fear of hell alongside the memory of being carried to bed. On the cover, he is six, in a photograph he took himself.
“I want to write music that keeps people company when they’re feeling lonely,” Cahill says. “That’s what music has largely been for me.”
